Pasadena, California – When someone is charged with a crime, the government walks into court with police reports, investigators, crime labs and a prosecutor who handles these cases every day. The person accused often walks in with a court date, a stack of paperwork and no clear idea what happens next. Jared Olen has spent his career trying to close that gap. It started with human rights work on behalf of political prisoners and grew into nearly eight years as a Los Angeles County Deputy Public Defender, standing beside thousands of people who could not afford to hire a lawyer.
Those experiences were a catalyst for Jared to start Olen Firm Criminal Defense Attorneys in Pasadena, a practice he built so people across Los Angeles County and surrounding counties get one lawyer who knows their case, answers their calls and pushes for fair treatment from the first hearing to the last.
Olen joined the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office in 2014. In his time there he represented thousands of adults and hundreds of juveniles at every stage of a criminal case. That meant arraignments, bail hearings, preliminary hearings, motions, negotiations, sentencing and approximately three dozen jury trials, along with dozens of bench trials, in courthouses across the county.
“As a public defender, I saw how much a case can change when someone gets into the evidence early. I also saw how little time the system leaves for that work,” said Olen. “I opened The Olen Firm so every client gets that time. The person who answers their questions is the same lawyer who stands next to them in court.“
The Olen Firm defends people accused of DUI, domestic violence, drug offenses, theft, assault and sex offenses, along with serious felonies including robbery, kidnapping, attempted murder and murder. The firm also handles juvenile cases, including hearings where prosecutors ask to move a young person’s case to adult court. Olen has litigated unlawful detentions, searches and seizures, search warrants, vehicle searches, Miranda issues and motions to suppress evidence. He brings in investigators and experts when a case calls for them.
His path to criminal defense started before law school. As a human rights activist, Olen worked to raise awareness of political prisoners around the world. He went on to graduate summa cum laude from Southwestern Law School on a full merit scholarship, where he published a legal scholarship in the Southwestern Law Review. After graduation he served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Otis D. Wright II of the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
“Most people who call us are scared, and their court date is coming fast,” Olen said. “My job is to tell them plainly what happens next, test the prosecution’s case, and stay with them until it is resolved.“
The Olen Firm’s headquarters sits at 35 N Lake Ave, Suite 710, in Pasadena, just north of Colorado Boulevard. The firm also keeps a satellite office at 355 S Grand Ave, Suite 2450, in downtown Los Angeles. Calls are answered 24 hours a day, and every new client starts with a free, confidential consultation.
